Gorgeous. I really love the natural live textured sound in this recording too, and the emotion in this version.

about
In the winter of 2019, my dear friend Jobi Riccio and I got together in her Boston apartment on a cold December evening to write.
We were watching the snow fall outside and bitching (our favorite activity) when we realized an hour and a half had gone by and we hadn't even opened our guitar cases. We were too busy venting about how exhausting and heavy the holiday season can be.
We half-heartedly joked about using our holiday angst for the song- and before too long the deed had been done. We had written a song sarcastically titled: "I Guess There's Always Next Year."
Too bad we pranked ourselves by writing that line about 2020.
Fast forward to November of this year- I'm lucky to be recording some songs live to tape (in a COVID safe situation), with one of my dearest and oldest friends: Jack Schneider. As I'm sitting down at the end of the session to play him what I joke is "the perfect holiday song for a year this shitty," he insists on recording it- despite me having no plans of releasing it, and not having even played it in full since last winter. He pressed record, I played the song, and that was the take we ended up going with.
There was something really cool about him capturing me singing that song for the first time this year, it was imperfect but it felt right.
Jobi heard the track, agreed, and remotely tracked some beautiful harmonies for it. My parents then graciously raided our family photo albums to find me a perfectly sassy Christmas photo of toddler me, I noodled with it on photoshop, and Jack got to work mixing and mastering, and a week or so later it was done.
I'm so glad to be sharing it, this year of all years, when everyone seems to be holding their breath waiting for it to end. I hope you enjoy this little live-to-tape sad holiday song. Maybe you can relate?
xo,
Liv
lyrics
These days I’m working like a dog
aint sure what I’m working towards
And all my little victories
aint enough for me anymore
I watch the streets fill up with snow
but all that I can see
is the traffic’s gonna suck coming home
and my hands are gonna freeze
everyone else is burning bright
putting on smiles and putting up lights
'round here
I am a live wire of nerves and fear
counting all the dreams that fell through
the things I didn’t do
I guess there’s always next year
diner window paint says “happy holidays”:
I guess we’ll see
cause my head goes to a heavy place
when I’m with my family
cause they’ll ask my sister "how’s your job?"
and ask my brother "how’s your wife?"
and then find a way to subtly say
"what is it you’re doing with your life?"
everyone else is burning bright
putting on smiles and putting up lights
'round here
I am a live wire of nerves and fear
counting all the dreams that fell through
the things I didn’t do
I guess there’s always next year

Why isn't Lula Wiles a bigger deal, they're so cool?? I was waiting patiently to hear the follow-up to What Will We Do and this album did not disappoint 💖 I love the lyrical themes they keep exploring & the intimate feel of their storytelling. It's hard to pick a favourite track, it changes with the time of day (or night). wool of bat
